Gary is 55 years old and was one of 8 children raised in the Zion City neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. Gary struggled with school and dropped in and out of high school several times before becoming involved in a vocational program for carpentry. Gary has had several jobs including working 5 years for Bishop Bakery, 4 years for Queen/Restonic Mattress Company and 15 years off and on for Mosely Moving. He has 4 sons and a daughter from his first marriage and 1 daughter who is 12 from his second marriage. Gary became homeless after losing his wife unexpectedly from an aneurism four years ago. He also lost his parents in 2003 & 2004, and he lost a brother unexpectedly in the last few months. Gary is very introverted and shy, and has suffered from chronic depression and alcoholism most of his adult life. He loves to spend time alone reading. Gary has been homeless for approx. the past 3 years and has entrusted caring for his daughter to his sister until he can overcome the diseases he struggles with. He is a quiet, gentle leader in the congregation at Church of the Reconciler who shows tremendous caring and compassion for others. For the past few years he has lived in an abandoned house, but through the help of volunteers and members of his Sunday School class Gary moved into public housing in February 2009. This is a huge step in his recovery process and he feels some anxiety about it. Gary works through temporary labor services as work is available. This requires him to be at the labor service office by 5 am each morning to stand in line for a chance to be sent out to work. Many days Gary waits but there is no work available.
Gary asks you to pray he will be re-united with several of his children he hasn't seen in the past few years, and that he will be able to re-build relationships with them. He also prays he will be able to get a car so he will have reliable transportation to get a better job.
